Early changes to the current Standards for RTOs
Hot off the press, the Skills Ministers have agreed to progress some changes to the current Standards for RTOs in advance of the full implementation in January 2025.
Of particular importance are the changes to who can train and assess. This has no impact on any trainer and/or assessor who currently meets the required standards.
But – what does it mean for future trainers and assessors?
The key changes will impact on any teacher holding current teacher registration within their state, allowing the registered teacher to deliver training in any VET context under supervision.
More importantly, if you hold current teacher registration in your state and complete the TAE Assessor Skill set or the TAE VET Delivered to School Students Teacher Enhancement Skills Set – then you will be able to train and assess in any VET context without supervision.
What does it take for a registered teacher to survive in the role of a VET trainer and assessor?
Vocational Education and Training is a broad reaching and diverse sector that is highly regulated and driven by the needs of industry.
When teachers first enter the VET sector, they often experience a kind of shock. There’s so much jargon and a myriad of rules to understand and navigate.
Curriculum are out and Training Packages are in. There’s no norm referencing – it’s all about the performance criteria and competency based assessment.
It takes a little time to become familiar with these new ways of thinking – understanding the Principles of Assessment and the Rules of Evidence – and that’s where Blueprint Career Development is here to help.
Blueprint has years of experience working with schools and supporting their teachers to navigate the world of VET. Our focus is on recognising the existing teacher skills and filling in the gaps.
Don’t go into VET unprepared or under trained – that’s not going to support your learners or meet the needs of your local industry.
So ask yourself three questions
- Do you know what makes up the four components of a Training Package?
- Do you know what the characteristics of the AQF levels are?
- And Do you how the ACSF can help you support your students?
If the answer is NO – then don’t go into the VET classroom until you’ve spent some time with Blueprint Career Development.
If the answer is YES – great – you are ready to work under supervision and continue to learn more about VET.
